Image
1. I chose this photo because Americans are not represented by one single ethnicity and is highly diverse. America is built upon by immigration which this image highly portrays. The image is important to me because I am an immigrant who moved to the states when I was young. I represent one of the immigrants of this photo which highly affects our society today. 2. The image depicts a variety of ethnic groups in the American flag. It shows that we are united as a country not by multiple ethnic groups but through many. The flag highly symbolizes America and the immigrants in the photo shows the impact and effect of immigrants. We are a nation of immigrants and they affect our every day life. The colors show the immigrants in black and white inside the red, white and blue flag. 3. The author created this image because they wanted to depict the melting pot of America. what was the biggest takeaway friim Group Visual Analysis last week? What was an ‘Ah hah’ moment or breakthrough in your understanding of the assignment? Conversely, what questions do you still have about the assignment? The biggest take away from the group visual analysis was the understanding and comprehension of the image and how we can relate it to a sustainability. The ah ha moment was when we chose the photo relating to the environment. We chose an image that depicts both nature and man made creations which we realized that we need to perserve the Earth for future generations. Nature cannot be taken for granted and we must do all we can because the Earth is our home. No further questions on the asssignment.

When analyzing the pathos of an ad, how are you sure that the emotions you experience are the ones that the creator wanted you to experience? Pathos in ads, uses emotional techniques to draw the person in. An example are the adoption videos where they play emotional music with the sad puppies. They want you to feel sorry for the dogs and hopefully adopt them. The use of pathos relies on playing with people's emotions and want the viewer to experience their message. Depends on whether they are vague or not.

Reading blog #6 Visual Analysis

Main points Visual rhetoric is how visual images communicate and create an argument designed to move a specific audience to think or act in a specific way.  Everywhere we go we are confronted with visual images that aim to persuade us  Reaching people's assumptions has to do with their levels of education, race, gender, and ethnicity. (Know your target demographic) Examine main image or text that captures your attention.  Reflect on what draws your attention to the image or text. Is there something shocking or startling with the photo or text.  Ethos in writing is meant to convey to the sponsors wish to be perceived Pathos in writing has to do how the images appeal to your emotions  Logos in an ad has to do with the logic of the image or text Quotes  "As a news magazine, not an entertainment magazine such as People , Time aims to reach broad, educated, even affluent, readership interested in keeping up with the current events."  This i...

PW REFLECTION ON ESSAY #1

How was the whole process of forming an Inquiry Question and 'proposing' your semester-long research in Essay #1?  Which part of the research plan over the semester are you looking forward to most, and what challenges do you anticipate?  Last, thinking ahead to Essay #2, what are some possible visuals that you could analyze to learn more about your topic? Topic: Immigration and society. The whole process made me reflect the way I think on a subject. I never fully analyzed a subject into an inquiry question and using it to build upon. I enjoy my topic of immigration because all my life is centered by immigration. I am an immigrant who moved to the states when I was five and my dad is an immigration lawyer that helps immigrants through getting their green card and help them stay in the states. I am looking forward for the library research because I can go more into depth with the topic and find out more information. The challenges are visual analysis because I feel at times my...

Immigration and their effect in America, or society? Imagine our country without immigrants and the impact would happen if they were gone. I am an immigrant who moved to states when I was young. I experienced a new environment where I tried to integrate American culture with my own. My parents generally thought that America was majority Caucasian but never did they expect a diversity of people. Many shops and restaurants are run and owned by immigrants. We were able to encounter a huge variety of cultures. I now realized that America is greatly shaped by Immigrants across the country.  I am interested in this topic because immigrants make up a large portion of the country. Recent laws opposed and discouraged immigration in the states. Doing this topic allows me to express the importance of immigrants and how they affect our society. Even in SFSU, there are a huge majority of range of people that doesn't define as one. Almost 60 million of the population are immigrants and...

Post Book Club Blog #1 ISHMAEL

8 - 10 pages of the book and predictions The start of the book consisted of the main character doing his/her daily morning routine. He felt angry and in disbelief of the newspaper ad, "TEACH seeks pupil. Must have an earnest desire to save the world. Apply in person." The main character recalled a moment in the past when he wanted to find a teacher and to save the world. But he believed it was childish and bewildered on saving the world. He then wanted to see if it was scam or a fake so he decided to go. Continuing on, he arrives in a office building where he is met up with this person and a gorilla. Annotations? (Brought the book) I plan to write on a journal the interesting events in the book and highlight the confusing parts/vocabulary. I then analyze why it happened and foreshadow for future events. I also put down character details if they have any. Predictions I predict that the main character is set into a mission to save the world with the gorilla. The other pe...

One point of my draft I need to focus on is why should the audience care. Some of the draft was vague and unexplained. My second point is fixing my sentences and formatting them better. My third point is making a better thesis. Lastly, I need to add more understanding and reasoning into my draft.

Idea Draft of Essay 1

How do immigrants feel about blending in with American culture rather than holding on their own culture and reviving it with their new community? Immigrants that move to the U.S usually have to fit into society by putting aside their culture. They believe that American food, clothes and overall culture is far superior than where they came from. They are embarrassed when their relatives from their county and speak their language. The topic relates to sustainability because many immigrants are confused with their identity as an "American" and an immigrant. Their two cultures collides and conflict because of how judgmental people are each cultures. I personally felt the same way and denied any aspect of my culture. I came from another country and moved to the states when I was younger. As I grew older, I slowly moved away from and tried my hardest to fit in with my American classmates. At the end of they day, people can not deny where they came from. We might adapt to the Am...

P.W: Which issue are you narrowing down?

I am leaning towards the topic of immigration and the recent laws such as the travel ban, removal of DACA and many more that Trump enforced during the past two years. I haven't chosen the exact one to fully talk on. My personal connection is due to the fact that I was a former immigrant who moved to the states when I was little. Also my dad works for immigration and does all he can to help immigrants. (Immigrants on society) - Considered

Main points Swales' model help you reading and writing research articles  Establishing a territory involves three steps of claiming centrality, making topic generalization and reviewing previous items of research.  Move 2 involves establishing a niche means the space needed for research by counter claiming, indicating a gap and question raising. Move 3 includes occupying a niche which answers move 2 in filling the space by announcing present research, announcing principle findings, and indicating structure of the research article. Quotes "The author makes statements about current knowledge, practices, or phenomena in the field."   Use anything that relates to the topic in order to further understand.  "In this move, the author argues that there is an open niche in the existing research, a space that needs to be filled through additional research." The writer can use the open space research and implement into their paper.  "The author ref...

Reading blog #4 on Thesis statements

Main points/Summary Thesis is an assertion that academic writers make at the beginning of what they write and then support using evidence.  Thesis encompasses the information writers use for their arguments. Working thesis is your first attempt at an assertion of your essay and valuable because it helps you read selectively. Working thesis has 3 models.  The correcting misinterpretation model is when you correct writers whose arguments you believe have misconstrued or more aspects of an issue. The filling-the-gap is the gap points of what are often overlooked or ignored in a discussion The modifying what others said model - Assumes that mutual understanding is possible Know that the issue is present Help the reader understand your claim Quotes "Never accept your working thesis as your final position." (100) Rework your thesis by looking over and revising till you reached the "perfect thesis" "The process of establishing a background for u...

Reading Blog #3 From Inquiry on Inquiry questions

Summary/Main points Inquiry is central to the process of composing. The writer uncovers questions when progressing with their writing. We must find ways to answer the questions by identifying the issue and formulating a question. The use of personal experience brings an argument on a point, to illustrate something, and make a connection. Find an issue that people are willing to dispute. We must resist binary thinking and tease out the complexities. Use other's ideas to build upon your writing. A writer's frame is the perspective in which a writer presents their arguments. Understand the constraint, a factor that narrows down the choices of the issue. 3 Quotes "When writers use framing strategies, they call attention to the specific conversations that set up the situation for their arguments." (pg. 79)  Framing strategies allow the situation to situated in the conversation in their arguments.  "As an academic writer, you might find that by extending oth...

P.W How do you read actively?

I engage in the book by focusing on the sentences and be critically engaging with the content. I analyze what happened and ask questions if they was something I did not understand. Some questions might be "why did this happen?" or "In what way the situation could have been better?" I also make predictions on the book after reading a certain paragraph that interested me. Annotations usually contain the main points, look for foreshadowings and highlights.
