"You must change people's minds. And you can't just root out a harmful complex of ideas and leave a void behind; you have to give people something as meaningful as what they've lost--something that makes better sense than the old horror of Man Supreme, wiping out everything on this planet that doesn't serve his needs directly or indirectly." (249)
"You should trust yourselves with your lives. That's the human way to live." (page 225)
"The leavers are still passing that accumulation along in whatever form it came to them. But we're not, because ten thousand years ago the founders of our culture said, 'This is all shit.'" (216).
"If we go on, there will be no successor to man, no successor to chimpanzees, no successor to orangutans, no successor to gorillas - no successor to anything alive now. The whole thing is going to come to an end with us." (Page 239)
Questions
- Why does Ismael seem like he is above the rules?
- How does imprisonment take to play into the story?
How does alcohol and other substances affect the narrator?
Reflection
The book allowed me to go into a deeper philosophical side of nature and humans. We are so self centered in the world. Our human civilization are also compared to imprisonment and how we are captives of a civilizational system. Humans will do anything that will ensure their survival whether they sacrifice nature and even other humans. The book made me realize the joys in life and that there are many messages in life that we need took look for.
